Perhaps surprisingly, Tottenham midfielder Josh Onomah has been allowed to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan.
Mauricio Pochettino usually doesn’t sanction loan moves for young players as he believes they are better off training with the first-team.
But according to Independent journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke, often reliable on all things Spurs, Pochettino was eventually persuaded to let Onomah play elsewhere this season.
The Argentine apparently believes Onomah’s best position is out wide. The player contends he is better as a box-to-box midfielder, as do others at the club.
In the end Pochettino sanctioned the 20-year-old’s loan deal, giving Onomah the opportunity to prove himself in the position he impressed in for England at the Under-20s World Cup. The video below suggests that could be the right decision.

Going out on loan is best for this lad. I think he’s a bit lightweight still, whether on the flanks or box to box, but Villa will prove a good test for him to see if he can eventually make it at Spurs. Tom Carroll never quite got over the lightweight factor, despite his influential performances at Swansea. I think he (Carroll) is a good player, but Winks should prove a far better fit for us. Onomah’s talent (as was Carroll’s) is not in doubt, but as there are plenty of talented young footballers around, it’s that little bit extra in their game (a combo of strength, pace, durability, vision etc ..as well as tricks and passing ability) which will determine a great career and the fame/fortune that comes with it. If anyone, however, will bring out the best in Onomah eventually, it’s Poch ..and I hope that’s the same with other young players, eg KWP, Edwards etc., at our club.
I think the issue for Onomah is the speed of the game. I don’t mean physically. In all of his world cup performances the game seemed to come to him at a manageable rate. In his Spurs first team performances he always appeared to be struggling to catch up and to be doing the bland and mundane because he just didn’t have the time to see all of his options.
I think he’s been played on the flanks because that helps to slightly reduce the information coming at a young player. He wants to play in the middle and Poch is saying you can’t handle that yet, not at this level.
This move can potentially address the problem. Forty games from now the boy comes back a man. This is an inspired loan.

Yep, got to agree with LarryB. He always looked a bit laid back and languid and just couldn’t get with the pace of the game. Hopefully this spell in the hurly, burly of the Championship with Villa will sharpen him up.
If he can cut in a physical competitive league like the championship then he will be ready to step up the following season to compete for a premiership place in the club or move on if he can’t hack it. Wait & see.
I personally don’t think onomah will quite make It at spurs, has been overtaken by winks in cm, and has players like Edwards on the wing coming through the ranks aswell. Think he will join the likes of mason, carroll and bentaleb who were on the edges of the 1st team but couldn’t step up enough tbh. Hopefully im wrong though
Mason and Bentaleb weren’t on the edges of the first team…..THEY WERE FIRST TEAM PLAYERS…..who were replaced either because we got better players (Dier) or because they just couldn’t keep it up (especially Bentaleb)
If poch says he thinks the kid will come good then I have no reason to doubt him

Im sorry to say that this lad just doesnt have the ability to play for us , unless we dont want to win things. I was wrong about Kane, Rose & hopefully Winks. But i dont think Onomah will win me over
