Toby Alderweireld’s representative Stijn Francis has told Tottenham to improve his client’s contract or let him leave.

The Belgian defender’s current deal expires in the summer of 2019. Spurs have an option to trigger a one-year extension, but in turn that will trigger a £25 million release clause.

In quotes published by The Independent, Francis said: “When you look at Toby’s statistics, they are impressive. Either he deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.”

He added: “Seven or eight big European clubs are interested in signing him. There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can.

“But these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy.”

Alderweireld is believed to earn considerably less than Spurs’ best paid players, Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, who are on contracts worth in excess of £100,000-a-week.

Tottenham fans will be hoping a new deal for the 28-year-old can be sorted sooner rather than later.

  1. Levy wouldn’t pay the money it would cost to replace him for someone of the same calibre . Surely it’s the cheaper option to pay him the same as our top earners. We are going to have to bite the bullet, and pay our senior players what they are worth. Otherwise our big shiny new stadium will be half full of fans watching a very average team
