Harry Winks has been called up to the senior England squad because of injuries to Phil Jones and Fabian Delph.

The Tottenham midfielder had initially been picked for the under-21s, but Gareth Southgate has promoted him with Jones and Delph dropping out.

Winks has started twice in the last week for Spurs, starring in the wins against APOEL Nicosia and Huddersfield Town.

He joins Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Harry Kane in the senior squad. Kyle Walker-Peters and Joshua Onomah remain with the under-21s.

Here’s how Tottenham fans reacted to the news on Twitter.

  1. Great for Harry Winks. He’s going to be a fabulous midfield player.
But right now, we have a dearth of creative players in the England team.
Can you imagine if Eriksen was English? With everything else in place,
that would put the tin lid on it ..and we’d have a team to compete with
the best! But we don’t ..or a Hazzard, Coutinho etc., or even a Mata, Ozul
or Fabregas! We simply don’t have anyone who can operate just behind
and within that final third, working with and understanding Alli, and creating
chances for Harry Kane. What I can’t work out, watching Shelvey yesterday,
is why he isn’t in the England set-up? He’s the closest, at present, to
a much needed someone who can unlock that final third for the forwards and the flanks.
Southgate is really not spoilt for choice on this, so PICK HIM (warts and all)!

  2. I like Shelvey as a player when he’s on song, the problem Southgate has got is that Shelvey is too big a risk as he’s proven time and time again that he can’t be trusted. Harry Winks is a dream of a player, retention of the ball is first class and he can see a simple pass as well as a defence splitting pass, he’s unlikely to be given a start over these 2 games but clearly Southgate see’s him as a potential selection for next summer’s World Cup squad. Fantastic for Winks and yet another player coming through the THFC academy, Poch and his team are doing us proud.

  3. If Winks is good/old/experienced enough to start for a top four Premier League side he is good enough to start for England. Henderson is an average player and Winks is class. Simple as that. If Southgate can’t see that I think we’ve got another duff manager.

  4. Everyone been saying he will replace henderson…i think livermore has been awful for us durinh southgates time. I dont see why he is even there. Although an ex yid, i dont feel his place is worthy. Keep henderson and winks next to him…
