Jan Vertonghen’s mother has suggested the Tottenham defender could eventually return to his former club Ajax.

The 30-year-old will become Belgium’s most capped player if he makes his 97th appearance for the Red Devils on Tuesday.

Vertonghen is out of contract in the summer of 2019, when he will be 32.

His mother, Ria Mattheeuws, has admitted she would like to see her son back at Ajax before he retires.

“It would be nice if he could go back to Ajax, but if he doesn’t compete with Tottenham, why would Ajax succeed? With the national team I hope for a World Cup final in Russia, or world champion.”

Vertonghen is arguably better than he’s ever been right now, so Spurs are in position to worry about him going back to the Netherlands at this moment in time.
