Toby Alderweireld has insisted he is happy at Tottenham while he “awaits a new contract offer” from the club, according to Sky Sports.
The Belgian defender’s current deal runs until the summer of 2019, and Spurs are expected to offer him improved terms at some point in the future.
For now, the 28-year-old doesn’t want to be drawn into speculation about his future.
“I had a good conversation with the manager,” he told Sky Sports News. “I told him I’m focused on football, to keep my game up and help the team.
“That’s all I can do. You can see I’m happy there, and I try to help the team, and that’s the way I always play football.
Asked if he has been offered a new contract Tottenham, Alderweireld said: “No, like I said, I am focused on football. The rest, I don’t know, we will see about that.”
Hopefully a new deal is sorted sooner rather than later. Alderweireld is a key member of the squad and deserves to be one of the highest earners.
Toby Alderweireld is the most consistent player we have had over the past few years.
His enthusiasm and behaviour is exemplified by not speaking out of turn to the media
and I believe he would make a great captain.
Mr Levy should just have a look at hard it is to replace someone like Toby and give him top wages.
It’s not just Toby who needs to be paid a decent wage, because let’s be honest that’s why we lost Kyle Walker, and I’m guessing that he’s in touch with his x team mates trying to lure them to better things, so either pay them more money Mr Levy or all the good work that the manager is found will all be for nothing.
Come on Mr Levy, you have a great team but if you don’t pay the right money you will lose half the team and half the supporters
