Tottenham are interested in re-signing Gareth Bale from Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.
However, Spurs will face competition from Manchester United for the Welshman, who joined Real Madrid in 2013 for a then-record fee of £85 million.
Bale made over 200 appearances during his six-year stint with Tottenham and scored 55 goals, including 26 in in his final season at the club.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo believes the 28-year-old is already aware he will be sold this summer.
Karim Benzema is apparently in the same boat. As a result, the report claims both players are already assessing their options.
Mundo Deportivo suggests Madrid are hoping to lure Neymar to the Bernabeu, and the sales of Benzema and Bale help to begin that process.
Previous reports have claimed Bale earns around £300,000-a-week at the moment. Meanwhile, Harry Kane is thought to be Spurs’ highest earner on £110,000-a-week.
For that reason, it’s difficult to see Bale returning to Tottenham unless he is willing to take a significant pay cut.
Money doesn’t seem to be a problem for Manchester United, so perhaps Old Trafford is a more likely destination.
Many Spurs fans will dreaming of Bale’s return ahead of the new stadium opening next term, but the report in question is speculative at best, at least for now.
