Tottenham are interested in signing Napoli midfielder Amadou Diawara, according to reports in Italy.

Since joining from Bologna in 2016, Diawara has made 37 appearances in all competitions for Napoli, scoring one goal – a penalty against Manchester City in the Champions League last October.

Back in January, Italian reports claimed Spurs had lodged a £33 million bid for the 20-year-old, although the story wasn’t picked up by any reliable British publications.

Now, Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb suggests Tottenham have identified Diawara as an “ideal investment” and the clubs are in talks over a potential summer deal.

Napoli are apparently undecided as to whether they want to keep Diawara or cash in on a player who hasn’t started a Serie A game since October.

Spurs are reportedly on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele. At just 20 years of age, Diawara certainly fits the bill, perhaps more so than 25-year-old Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, who has also been linked with Tottenham.

However, Diawara’s lack of recent appearances raises questions marks over his ability. Is he good enough to even challenge Dembele, currently in the form of his life, for a spot in Spurs’ midfield?

  1. He looks a good player and really doesn’t have to be good enough to challenge Dembele on his current form, just a good young player happy to learn and develop and cover when Dembele needs a rest or his form drops. He looks a good balance of good positioning, ball winning and good vision and passing, so with more experience seems to have he necessary skills to develop into an excellent player
With Dier, Wanyama, Sissoko and Winks also in the midfield mix he’d have time to develop, although I wouldn’t be shocked to see Sissoko move in summer
