Mauricio Pochettino left Toby Alderweireld out of Tottenham’s squad to face Chelsea “without an explanation,” according to the Mirror.
Spurs secured their first league victory at Stamford Bridge for 28 years on Sunday, but Alderweireld wasn’t even on the bench despite playing 90 minutes for Belgium just days before.
The 29-year-old was sidelined for three months with a hamstring injury earlier this season and has struggled to return to fitness since returning in February.
His lack of game time has also been put down to speculation surrounding his future – Alderweireld is believed to have turned down Tottenham’s latest contract offer.
That has led to interest from a host of big clubs from across Europe including Paris Saint-Germain, who are reportedly willing to pay Alderweireld £200,000-a-week.
There is now feeling the defender is edging closer to the exit door at Spurs after the Mirror revealed he wasn’t given an explanation for his omission at Chelsea.
It certainly seems like there has been a falling out between Pochettino and Alderweireld, and I wouldn’t be hugely surprised to see the centre-back leave this summer.
The Toby situation seems to be fairly clear; he is likely on his way. Slightly more interested in what Pochettino might have said to keep Moura happy on the bench again. The Brazilian needs to play, I hope he will get a chance to start against Stoke.
I guess its difficult to tell a passionate spurs player that he can’t play . But he isn’t one is he?
Mauricio Pochettino does NOT have to explain to Toby Anderweireld, why he wasn’t in the team v Chelsea. Anderwiereld has caused his own demise at Spurs. Trying to hold them to randsome at a really important part of the season, including the massive Chelsea game, he’s having a f….. laugh, 5 year contract at his age + 200 K a week ! I understand why he’s asking for those things, but the timing stinks, I’ve no time for ‘Mercenary Footballers’ at the best of times !
I agree 100% and we do not need those mercenary players no matter how good they are, however, we don’t know the actual figures and those are probably sexed up by the media.
Unlike a few that have left in the recent past (Bale, Modric, Walker, Berbatov, etc), Alderweireld would actually prefer to stay, its just as issue about the terms of the contract. Until we find out what happened we should reserve judgement.
That being said, I think Poch is right to prioritize the players who are committed to the club and have their futures cemented. This project is all about building something sustainable and continuity.

Toby a great player but as he is sure to be leaving why should he be selected before others who are fit and our future team players
Toby is on his way out – a great shame but if he isn’t committed to the cause he should not be playing. Spurs have more than coped without him. At least Toby performed very well whenever he wore the Spurs shirt. That can’t be said of the worst mercenary to ‘play’ for Spurs – Emmanuel Adabayor.
Spurs are unbeaten in 10 …….. without Toby ……
