Tottenham are considering a summer move for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to football.london.

The report claims Tottenham have joined Arsenal and Barcelona in the race for the 18-year-old centre-back, who is valued at £50 million by Ajax.

De Ligt has emerged as one the most promising young players in Europe since making his Eredivisie debut at age of just 16 – he is also a full Netherlands international.

Spurs are apparently keen to make an early move for the teenager in order to prevent other clubs from signing him first.

That would make a refreshing change to the club’s transfer philosophy – Tottenham didn’t sign anybody until late August last summer.

De Ligt is a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld, whose Spurs future remains up in the air after he was left out of the squad to face Chelsea on Sunday.

The Belgian has been heavily linked with a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in recent days after talks with Tottenham over a new contract broke down.

If he leaves, De Ligt would be an ideal replacement.

  1. We already have the £41M replacement for Alderweireld. He’s called Davinson Sanchez. Any further central defensive acquisitions will not cost £50M!

    • playing 3 at the back as Rose could be off and Trippier and Aurier haven’t lit up the WB positions with an injury to Sanchez or Vertongen would leave Foyth or Dier, Dier is in my mind better as a DM and Foyth is at least another season may be 2 away from breaking into the first 11, with Dier being deployed as a CB can disrupt the team pattern, if you want us to challenge for the EPL or champions league this is what it costs, but if you’re happy with the Europa cup and Spurs slipping back to mid to 6th then yes you are right we do not need another class CB

  2. I watch this player ever week, he would be a great signing for us and worth ever penny. De Ligt he has got it all and a great player , I just pray this come of and we sign him.
