Jan Vertonghen says Tottenham are in their best shape since he joined the club ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United.

Spurs are yet to win a trophy under Mauricio Pochettino, or indeed since the League Cup success of 2008.

But the team has improved drastically under the Argentinian’s management, and Vertonghen has been one of Tottenham’s standout players over the last two or three seasons.

Earlier this week, the Belgian was voted into the PFA Team of the Year alongside his Spurs teammates Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane.

More Tottenham players were included in the team than any other club aside from Premier League champions Manchester City.

And Vertonghen believes Spurs’ quality could result in silverware being won by the end of this season and beyond.

“Everyone at the club is looking forward to games like Saturday and being in finals,” Vertonghen said (via ESPN).

“I’ve been here a long time and this is definitely the best team I’ve played in at Tottenham.

“This team and club deserves a trophy for all the work we’ve put in, and we hope Saturday can be the next step.

“Everyone always says: ‘What do you need to win trophies?’ But when I won my first the next couple followed at a very quick tempo.

“You just need that belief you can do it and then they will come. We’re full of confidence that we can.”

According to reports, Tottenham will make offering Vertonghen a new contract one of their priorities over the summer.

His recent performances certainly warrant a reward, and Spurs fans will be hoping the club can tie him down for his remaining best years.
