Tottenham have emerged as the favourites to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes ahead of a host of Serie A clubs, according to reports in Italy.

Gomes allegedly came close to joining Spurs last summer, but a deadline day deal failed to materialise.

The midfielder signed for Barcelona from Valencia for a fee in the region of £31.5 million in the summer of 2016.

However, he has struggled to nail down a place in the the La Liga giants’ starting line-up and is expected to leave Camp Nou at the end of the season.

Italian outlet Calcio Mercato reports Gomes’ previous agent, Jorge Mendes, had held talks with AC Milan and Juventus over a potential move to AC Milan.

But the report claims Gomes has recently replaced Mendes with Paul Martin, who represents the likes Ross Barkley and John Stones.

Martin’s appointment has apparently put Tottenham in pole position to sign Gomes.

The 24-year-old has made 29 appearances for the Portugal national side and has also attracted interest from West Ham United in recent months.

Spurs are thought to be on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele, and Gomes could fit the bill.
