Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele will both miss Tottenham’s midweek meeting with Newcastle United at Wembley, meaning Moussa Sissoko could be handed a start against his former club.

However, Jan Vertonghen is available for selection despite suffering an ankle injury against West Bromwich Albion.

Four points from their final two games should be enough to seal Champions League qualification for Spurs, who face Leicester City on Sunday following Wednesday’s encounter with Newcastle.

Dier, who was on the bench as Tottenham lost 1-0 at West Brom at the weekend, will miss the Newcastle clash through illness.

Meanwhile, Dembele has failed to recover from the ankle injury he sustained in last week’s 2-0 home win over Watford.

That means Mauricio Pochettino might be forced to turn to Sissoko against his old club – the Frenchman joined Spurs form Newcastle for £30 million in the summer of 2016.

Alternatively, Christian Eriksen could drop a little deeper to partner Victor Wanyama in central midfield.

With Jan Vertonghen fit and available, Pochettino could opt for three centre-backs again, meaning Wanyama won’t need as much defensive help from Eriksen.
