Harry Winks will undergo surgery on his ankle after agreeing a new five-year contract with Tottenham, according to the London Evening Standard.
On Thursday, the club revealed Winks has extended his contract until 2023 – it is the third new deal he has signed in under two years.
Winks broke into the Spurs team last season but missed the latter stages of the 2016-17 campaign with an ankle injury.
After returning and impressing in Champions League matches against Real Madrid this term, the midfielder hurt his ankle again and has struggled for game time ever since.
As a result, Winks was sent for rehabilitation in Qatar last month.
However, according to the Standard, that treatment wasn’t sufficient and the 22-year-old now requires surgery to repair his ankle.
Speaking to Tottenham’s official website, Winks revealed he is focused on returning to fitness.
He said: “The most important thing in the short-term is to get myself fit, get my ankle right at White Sands and hopefully I can have a long, injury-free campaign next year, contribute to a lot of games and we can go on and win a trophy that we all know we want and deserve I’d like to be a part of that.”
Having played for England this year, Winks might have been on the plane to Russia if not for his injury troubles.
Hopefully he can fully recover over the summer and starting playing reguarly again for Spurs and England next season.
