Tottenham have made a £48 million offer for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to reports in Italy.
De Ligt, 18, has been a sensation in the Eredivisie since breaking into Ajax’s first team at a young age – he is already a full Netherlands international.
Spurs are likely to be in need of a new centre-back this summer as Toby Alderweireld is expected to leave the club.
Alderweireld is attracting interest from Manchester United after failing to agree terms on a new contract with Tottenham earlier this year.
De Ligt has been mooted as potential replacement for Alderweireld in recent weeks, and the teenager is believed to be among Spurs’ top summer targets.
Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web claims Juventus are also monitoring De Ligt, but Tottenham have already tabled an offer for the centre-back.
Spurs’ bid is said to be in the region of €55 million (£48m), a significant fee to pay for an 18-year-old.
De Ligt is rated among the best young players in Europe, which is why Ajax will be able to command such a hefty fee for his services.
He would be an ideal replacement for Alderweireld, although it seems Tottenham will need to break their transfer record to sign him.
