Tottenham were put off by the wage demands of Brazilian winger Bernard, who is reportedly set to join Everton.
That’s according to Guardian, who claim Spurs were among a host of clubs to register an interest in Bernard before learning of is £200,000-a-week wage demands.
Bernard left Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk at the end of the 2017/18 and is now available on a free transfer.
The 25-year-old was linked with Tottenham in 2013 before he joined Shakhtar from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro.
And the Guarian claims Spurs – along with West Ham United, Chelsea and AC Milan – were keen once again in recent weeks until Bernard’s wage demands became clear.
It’s certainly a surprise if Everton are willing to pay such a huge salary. It is believed Harry Kane is the only Tottenham player on a similar weekly wage.
Spurs are yet to make a signing this summer, although Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish is expected to arrive before Thursday’s deadline.
That said, there is a real possibility Tottenham will end up with no new recruits whatsoever.
Here we go again selling a player to a rival club nobody coming in, as a spurs fan for many years I feel betrayed by Mr levy, who would blame poch if he walks by xmas
