Manchester United star Fred has said beating Tottenham at Old Trafford on Bank Holiday Monday will prove the hosts have the ability win the Premier League title this season.
Jose Mourinho’s side started their season with a win against Leicester City but fell to a shock 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.
Meanwhile Spurs have won their opening two fixtures, beating Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park and newly-promoted Fulham 3-1 at Wembley.
Tottenham have the chance to go six points clear of United on Monday, boosting their chances of finishing in the top four – and possibly their title aspirations – at a very early stage of the campaign.
But Fred, who joined United from Shakhtar Donetsk during the summer transfer window, has said it is vital the 20-time English champions take all three points.
“It’s a very important game,” Fred told Sky Sports News. “This week we’ve been working, focusing on this game, we want to go out and get the win in front of our home fans.
“We know Tottenham are a great team but we need to get the win if we are to aspire to win the league.”
Once a transfer target for United, Danny Rose has a chance of playing a part on Monday – although reports suggest he could be on his way to Paris Saint-Germain.
Toby Alderweireld, also linked with United over the summer, is likely to start after winning back his place in the team against Fulham.
