Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris have been nominated to win the 2018 Ballon d’Or, while two former Tottenham stars – Gareth Bale and Luka Modric – are also on the 30-man shortlist.
The nominees were announced throughout the day on Monday. Eight Real Madrid players are on the shortlist as a result of the La Liga giants winning their third successive Champions League title this year, while Kane and Lloris are among 11 nominees from the Premier League.
Since 2008 only two players have won the Ballon D’or. But will any of the four players with a connection to Spurs give Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo a run for their money this year?
Modric probably has the best chance of breaking the duopoly. The midfielder was named best male player at the 2018 Fifa Football Awards last month after winning the Champions League with Madrid and reaching the World Cup final with Croatia.
Lloris captained France to World Cup glory in Russia but is unlikely to be a genuine contender. The same goes for Kane and Bale who – despite winning the World Cup Golden Boot and scoring spectacularly in the Champions League final respectively – were outshone by the likes of Messi and Ronaldo in 2018.
Regardless, it’s pleasing to see two current and two former Tottenham players in with a shout, however slim their chances are.
