Former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric has won the 2018 Ballon d’Or, ending the duopoly of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The award has gone to Ronaldo or Messi every year since 2007, when it went to Kaka.

But Modric, who played for Spurs between 2008-2012 before moving to Real Madrid, was named the best male footballer on the planet in a ceremony on Monday.

The Croatian captained his country to the World Cup final in Russia over the summer after winning his fourth Champions League title with Real Madrid.

He beat second-placed Ronaldo and third-placed Antoine Griezmann to the award this year.

In the eyes many Tottenham fans, Modric is one of the very best players to ever play for the club despite the fact he failed to win a trophy in north London.

Since leaving for Madrid in 2012, the 33-year-old has stepped up another level and become one of the best midfielders of modern times.

Seeing a former Spurs player win football’s most prestigious individual award should make the majority of the club’s supporters immensely proud.
