Tottenham are interested in signing Porto midfielder Hector Herrera, according to reports in Portugal.

Herrera has made just under 150 appearances for Porto since joining the Portuguese champions in the summer of 2013.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months and Portuguese outlet O Jogo, via the Mirror (04:38, 9/1), claims Inter Milan are leading the chase to sign him.

However, it is believed Spurs, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and AS Roma are also keen on signing Herrera.

The Mexico international has made 28 appearances across all competitions so far this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Tottenham are in need of a new central midfielder with Mousa Dembele reportedly set to leave for the Chinese Super League.

The Londoners would have been wise to sign a long-term replacement for Dembele in last summer’s transfer window. It will be more difficult to find an alternative this month.

Herrera is 28 and doesn’t really fit the criteria for a ‘long-term’ replacement, but Spurs might still be tempted to strengthen their squad in central midfield if he is available.
