Manchester United are planning to trigger Toby Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause this summer, according to the Sun.

However, the Red Devils are yet to make contact with Spurs over a potential deal for the defender.

Aldierweireld recently signed a one-year contract extension with Tottenham, meaning his current deal now expires at the end of next season.

However, in doing so the Belgian activated a £25 million release clause which can be triggered up until the the final two weeks of the coming transfer window – and Spurs have no option but to accept bids of that value.

He has been linked with a number of clubs including United, who were mooted as his most likely destination last summer but a deal failed to materialise.

Now, the Sun claims United are back in for Alderweireld as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to strengthen at centre-back.

That there is yet to be contact between the clubs may simply be a matter of timing, or it could suggest the Sun’s report is mere speculation for now.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a number of clubs trigger the release clause, but Tottenham fans will be clinging to the faint hope Alderweireld will stick around.
