Mauricio Pochettino has suggested Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min should be on the Player of the Year shortlist.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and Raheem Sterling are the favourites to win the award, which is likely to go to a player who turns out for one of the current Premier League title contenders.

But Son has arguably been Spurs’ most consistent performer this season despite missing spells of the campaign because of international duty with South Korea.

And Pochettino believes the 26-year-old deserves to be a nominee for Player of the Year.

“If we assess form since November, he can be a contender,” Pochettino said (via the Mirror).

“In the first few months of the competition, he was off the pace. He has had to travel a lot with South Korea, but after November he has been fantastic.”

Son has scored 18 goals and provided nine assists in 40 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham so far this season.

He also became both the first Premier League goalscorer and the first Champions League goalscorer at Tottenham’s new stadium with strikes against Crystal Palace and Manchester City.

The South Korean is likely to lead the line when Spurs face Huddersfield Town at the new stadium on Saturday – check out our predicted line-up here.

  1. Moussa Sissoko has been Spurs best player this year. Sonny has played well this year, and with all those international minutes under his belt, but new moose has been the plus.
