Mauricio Pochettino has said Christian Eriksen is willing to discuss a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur but not until the end of the season.
Eriksen, whose current deal expires at the end of next season, scored an 88th minute winner as Spurs edged past Brighton and Hove Albion to secure three vital Premier League points on Wednesday night.
It was the Dane’s ninth goal of the season and could go a long way in helping Tottenham qualify for the Champions League with a top four finish.
After the game, Pochettino revealed he is hopeful Eriksen will stick around by signing a new long-term contract with the club.
“I hope and wish Christian can be with us in the future,” Pochettino said (via BBC Sport).
“I think Christian and us, we are so open to talk and we will see what happens.
“It’s a situation that’s a very special one and Christian is a special person. The timing for him or for the club to be agreeing something is maybe different to another player.
“It’s so close to the end of the season and there’s a lot of time to talk afterwards. The most important thing now, not only for him, is for all the players to be focused and try to achieve the things we want.”
It makes sense that Eriksen would want to wait until the campaign is over to enter discussions over a new deal.
With the race for a top four finish still ongoing, plus the fact Spurs are in the Champions League semi-finals, there are simply too many distractions for now.
What’s more, Eriksen may want to see whether Tottenham qualify for the Champions League before committing his future to the club.
