Toby Alderweireld says Tottenham Hotspur must not rest on their laurels after losing to Liverpool in the Champions League final.

The defender insists Spurs should be aiming to reach the final of the competition once again next season.

Having been linked with an exit during the last couple of transfer windows, it now seems possible Alderweireld will play out the remaining year of his contract.

That said, Tottenham will be forced to accept any offers that meet his £25 million release clause this summer.

But if he does stay, Alderweireld appears to be determined to help the the team reach yet another Champions League final next term.

“Of course everybody is very disappointed but we have to look at it like this: Its the next step that we have taken and now we have to keep going,” the Belgian said (via the Mirror).

“Not think: ‘Oh we are happy with the final and maybe in a couple of years [we’ll be back].’ No, no. Next year we want to be here again.

“That’s the mentality, the philosophy we have in this group. To improve every season. And again with the new stadium, with the new vibe in the team, we’ll do good.

“Every year in the Champions League we’ve improved. It’s difficult to talk about next season now. We are very disappointed. But in a couple of days we need to get our heads together then we next season we go again.”

Manchester United are said to be considering a move for Alderweireld, although the fact they failed to qualify for the Champions League could end their chances of signing him.

The 30-year-old seems keen to play in Europe’s elite competition once again next season, which could be the reason behind his apparent willingness to remain at Spurs.

However, a number of Champions League clubs would be foolish to turn down the chance to sign Alderweireld for just £25 million.

  1. Toby shows the right attitude based on experience and leadership qualities. It’d be good to see him put in effort for Spurs for two or three more seasons yet.
