Tottenham Hotspur have missed out on the signing of Norwich City starlet Ben Godfrey after the defender signed a new contract, according to the Daily Mail.

Godfrey scored four goals in 31 Championship appearances last season – not bad for a 21-year-old centre-back.

The Mail claims he was attracting ‘intense interest’ from Spurs and Manchester United, but this week Norwich announced Godfrey has signed a new four-year contract with the club.

It’s likely that Godfrey has been promised regular minutes after the Canaries secured promotion to the Premier League.

If he had left for Tottenham or United, he probably would have to be patient for game time.

It would have been interesting to see if Godfrey would have preferred a move away from Carrow Road had Norwich failed to secure promotion to the top-flight.

Spurs may be in need of a new centre-back with Toby Alderweireld’s future still uncertain.

By all accounts, no club has triggered his £25 million release clause yet, but there is a good chance he will no longer be a Tottenham player at the start of next season.
