Gareth Bale will not face his former club Tottenham this week after pulling out of Real Madrid’s Audi Cup campaign.

Spurs are set to face Real Madrid on Tuesday and hosts Bayern Munich or Fenerbahce on Wednesday. Danny Rose has returned to the squad while Serge Aurier and Victor Wanyama will remain in London with injury concerns.

Madrid will be without Bale, who looked set to join Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning over the weekend – but the move fell through. The Welshman now looks set to stay at the Bernabeu.

However, multiple outlets including the Guardian claim Bale asked to be left out Madrid’s Audi Cup squad as he is unhappy at being denied a move to China. That means there will be no reunion between the 30-year-old and Tottenham.

Bale had been linked with a return to Spurs earlier this summer, but that became unrealistic when it emerged he is looking to keep earning his currently salary, which is thought to be around £600,000 a week.

Tottenham simply can’t afford such wages. It’s a shame the fans won’t get to see Bale in the flesh in Munich, but it sounds like he simply isn’t in the right headspace.
