Tottenham’s bid for Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes failed because it was too dependent on achievement-based bonuses, according to reports in Portugal.
Fernandes was heavily linked with Spurs and Manchester United throughout the transfer window, although the Londoners were deemed a more likely destination as deadline day neared.
In the end, Tottenham bought Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis and failed in an attempt to sign Juventus forward Paulo Dybala. Talk of a move for Fernandes went quiet, but the Portuguese media believe Spurs did indeed try for the Sporting playmaker.
As relayed by Sport Witness, Portuguese outlet O Jogo claims Tottenham made an initial bid of €45 million for Fernandes. On top of that, Spurs were willing to pay an extra £12.5 million if they won the Premier League, and another £12.5 million if they won the Champions League – all of which would add up to Sporting’s €70 million asking price.
However, Sporting apparently wanted €60 million up front, resulting in their rejection of Tottenham’s offer. It’s unclear whether Spurs will go back in for Fernandes in the future, but it doesn’t sound like the negotiations went too well this time around.
