Tanguy Ndombele made a dream start to his Tottenham career by scoring on his competitive debut for the club against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Spurs came from a goal down to beat newly-promoted Villa 3-1 at the new stadium. John McGinn shocked the hosts with an early opener, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men rallied in the second half and took all three points thanks to Ndombele’s equaliser and a typical Harry Kane brace.
Ndombele’s goal came at a crucial time. Tottenham were struggling to open Villa up until the Frenchman placed a precise shot past goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who had looked unbeatable up to that point.
However, it wasn’t the perfect performance from Ndombele. The Frenchman looked a little rusty at times, which is understandable – he may take some time to adapt to Pochettino’s ideology and a new league.
After the game, Pochettino suggested Spurs fans will be treated to much better displays from Ndombele in the future.
“It was a fantastic performance,” said Pochettino of the debutant (via journalist Jonathan Veal). “But to be honest there is a lot to improve, he only showed 30 or 40 per cent of his potential.”
Tottenham supporters certainly have the right to be excited about the club’s record signing. Hopefully Pochettino’s prophecy comes to fruition.
