Sporting Lisbon have offered Bruno Fernandes a new contract as a result of Tottenham’s interest in the playmaker, according to reports in Portugal.
Fernandes was heavily linked with Spurs before the English transfer window closed but the Londoners signed Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis instead. Of course there is still a chance a foreign side will try to buy Fernandes before the European deadline at the end of the month.
But the 24-year-old may have just been given a reason to extend his stay at Sporting. Portuguese outlet A Bola – as relayed by Sport Witness – claims Fernandes has been offered a new deal by his current employers because of a previous agreement.
Fernandes was apparently promised €5 million plus a new contract in the event that Sporting rejected offers of over €35 million. A Bola believes Tottenham made a bid of €70 million, and reports of a new contract being on the table all but confirm that Spurs did indeed lodge an offer this summer.
Manchester United were also said to be keen before the window shut, so it will be interesting to see if the English pair go back in for Fernandes in January or next summer – that is if he isn’t sold to another European club this month.
