Tottenham fell to a shock 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United at home on Sunday afternoon.

A first half goal from Joelinton was enough to hand the visitors all three points, while Spurs arguably should have been awarded a penalty late on.

Here’s how every Tottenham player rated on the day.

Hugo Lloris, 6 – Made a good save before the goal, which he could do nothing about.

Kyle Walker-Peters, 4 – Didn’t make the necessary bursts forward before being substituted with an injury.

Toby Alderweireld, 6 – Thwarted most of Newcastle’s counter-attacks and looked solid.

Davinson Sanchez, 4 – Caught out of position for the goal and never looked totally assured.

Danny Rose, 5 – Showed a bit more intent than Walker-Peters but his crossing was inconsistent.

Harry Winks, 3 Really sloppy with his passing and generally slow to get Spurs going in midfield.

Moussa Sissoko, 6 – Performed admirably when he moved to right wing-back after Walker-Peters went off.

Erik Lamela, 4 – Probed in the first half but nothing came off. Subbed for Giovani Lo Celso.

Son Heung-min, 4 – Unlucky to see a volley saved. It was his only good shot on a disappointing return to action.

Lucas Moura, 4 – Missed one of the best chances and was a little erratic throughout.

Harry Kane, 3 – A real off day for Tottenham’s talisman, who missed a clear cut chance to equalise. Unlucky with the penalty decision.

Substitutes

Christian Eriksen, 4 – Couldn’t repeat the impact he made against Aston Villa two weeks ago.

Giovani Lo Celso, 5 – Quiet for the most part but played a fine pass through to Kane for the penalty incident.

Ben Davies, N/A – A late arrival.

  1. Certain points should be explained to MP as I am not sure that he is aware of them(sometimes not sure if he knows that day follows night).

-Sanchez is just not up to it; why didn’t we buy de Ligt at the time instead;why this pathetic feud with Vertonghen?Super Jan should start every game.

    – Son and Moura just can’t perform with Kane;you would think in theory that Kane,Son and Moura would have enough firepower to penetrate the Newcastle defence and not have a pathetic return of shots in this game.Should we think of selling Kane then?

Lamela is just not good enough and I also don’t believe that KWP is the answer to our right back problem.

We will NEVER EVER win anything with MP in charge.Fact.

I actually feel sorry for Daniel Levy spending all this money and coming up with the best training ground and stadium in the world but a poor team to perform inside it.
And to all our deluded fans who are going to come up with the excuse that every team has an off day, well Man City and Liverpool don’t have off days as they are proving week in week out.
I really fear for us at Woolwich next weekend.

  2. What did Klopp tell his players ? Be hungry be aggressive. Be positive Can we get that instilled in our players ? Introduce the younger players who have more desire and appetite to win !!

  3. Apart from a thoroughly poor performance by the team, Personally the standard of the Refereeing was so poor that each time Newcastles Almiron went near the ball he fell over, poll axed. Then it moved to other players that warranted Yellow cards for ungentlemanly conduct. Even VAR failed in its job to intervene when Newcastle scored. Joelinton came from an offside position to score but if Taylor(VAR Ref) could not see a blatant penalty then the system is never going to work, Lascelles should have been red carded for ungentlemanly conduct, I was more disappointed with PURE bad control and would have brought the whole team off and argued with the FA that until it can be proved, the VAR should be ended. Referees like todays banned for good(the same referee was as bad in last weeks match he officiated. Clubs should be allowed to insist on a Complaints procedure.

  4. I agree that with Winks and Sissoko in the middle you might as well not have any forwards as they are so slow in doing anything with the ball. The defence is now the weakest since MP first arrived. We see to be going backwards.

  5. You have Eriksen, you have Vertonghen at your disposal and you elect to play Winks……Winks who?

I’m seriously beginning to think that Mauricio Pochettino’s stock at Spurs is actually overstated.

  6. Bring back Trippier!!! After a rest he was always going to go back to God level. The criticism he got and his leaving was short sighted and stupid!
Now At Madrid get to enjoy his excellence.
