Jan Vertonghen wants to sign a new contract with Tottenham after entering the final year of his current deal, according to Football Insider.

The Belgian’s future has been a source of speculation in recent weeks after he was left out of Mauricio Pochettino’s starting line-up in each of the opening three matches of the new Premier League season.

He returned to the team in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal a fortnight ago amid suggestions he had lacked fitness at the beginning of the campaign. There was also talk the 32-year-old was being omitted because of his contract situation.

Football Insider claims Vertonghen is keen to extend his stay with the club beyond next summer and hopes to open talks with Tottenham soon. However, that might be more complicated that it sounds.

Spurs generally don’t offer contract extensions to players over 30, though Vertonghen might prove to be an exception given the years of service he has given to the Londoners. A seemingly strained relationship with Pochettino could also be a stumbling block.

    • Jan is the ONLY player we have that even comes close to resembling a “leader”, to let him leave-regardless of his age-would be criminal, not to mention that he’s been our best defender for numerous seasons.
Pick your dummy up Poch and play him and get your head out of your arse Levy and give him a 3yr contract.

  1. WITHOUT A DOUBT…iF THERE IS ONE PLAYER WHO DESERVES SOME RESPECT AND LOYALTY…IT’S HIM…BEST PLAYER BY A MILE OVER THE LAST FEW SEASON’S.

  2. I just do not understand why Pochitino is treating Vertonghen like this our best and most consistant player last year I would make him captain and Eriksen has spoilt our start to season if he wants to go get rid he has not exactly played for the team for a long time so either sign or go I am not that bothered.
