Blackburn Rovers have emerged as favourites to sign former Tottenham and German Under-21 captain Lewis Holtby.

The 28-year-old, who is a free agent after his contract at Bundesliga side Hamburg – the club Holtby joined Spurs from following a successful loan spell a year earlier – was not renewed in the summer and he left the club after four years.

Holtby joined Tottenham from Schalke in January 2013, but failed to make an impact at White Hart Lane, scoring just three goals in 43 appearances before he was loaned out to Fulham and then eventually sold by Mauricio Pochettino to Hamburg the following season.

The midfielder, who has been capped three times at senior level for Germany, looked set to join former Spurs man Georges-Kevin Nkoudou at Besiktas earlier this summer, but a deal never materialised.

And now, according to the Lancashire Telegraph, Tony Mowbray is interested in offering Holtby a chance to revitalise his career in the Championship and the two parties currently remain locked in talks ahead and are confident of completing a deal.
