Former Tottenham midfielder Lewis Holtby has joined Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a two-year contract.

The former German Under-21 captain, who is a free agent after leaving Schalke in the summer, endured a disappointing three-year spell at Spurs, in which he scored just three goals in 42 appearances under the guidance of both Andres Villas Boas and then Mauricio Pochettino.

His only Premier League goal for Tottenham came in a London derby victory over Fulham in December 2013, the side he joined on loan a month later before moving back to Germany in the summer. Holtby returned to England and played three times under Pochettino at the beginning of the 2014/2015 campaign before joining Schalke on a permanent basis.

The 29-year-old, who was also linked with Besiktas this summer, was closing in on a move to Ewood Park as we reported earlier this week via the Lancashire Telegraph. And after days of talks, he joined the Championship outfit today on a free transfer and will be hoping to make his debut when Blackburn travel to Reading on Saturday.
