Rio Ferdinand was left shocked as to why Tottenham’s record-signing Tanguy Ndombele was substituted in their damaging Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last night.
The 22-year-old has endured a difficult start to life at Spurs, but has shown signs of improvement in recent weeks and grabbed his second goal in the Premier League victory over Southampton at the weekend.
Ndombele was rewarded with his fourth consecutive start against the Bundesliga champions and was pulling the strings in the opening half-hour, producing two excellent passes for Heung Min Son, although he should have bagged his third goal in Tottenham colours from a Serge Aurier pull-back.
He was replaced on 64 minutes by Christian Eriksen, as Mauricio Pochettino altered with the formation, a change that Ferdinand found extremely strange.
The former Manchester United and England defender, who was part of the BT Sport panel for the game, said: “He must be injured. He was the one who was probing.
“There were other players on the pitch who could have come off. Dele could have been a straight swap.”
