Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen is “not good enough” for Bayern Munich, according to club legend Lothar Matthaus.

Eriksen has been linked with Bayern in recent weeks as speculation around his future continues to do the rounds. The Dane has entered the final year of his contract, and reports this week claimed he has been in contact with Real Madrid for some time.

But with Real apparently prioritising a move for Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, Eriksen may have to move elsewhere if he wants to leave Spurs in the January transfer window. Bayern and Juventus have been mooted as potential destinations.

However, Matthaus believes Eriksen’s performances in 2019 have not been good enough for Tottenham, thus he believes the Dane is below the standard of Bayern.

“I’ve been following the player for a long time and so far in 2019 he has disappointed me,” the German told Sport1, as translated by BFW. “A transfer to FC Bayern wouldn’t make sense in my view, and would be very surprising.

“If he’s not enough for Tottenham, he’s not good enough for Bayern. Uli Hoeness has also said before that Bayern doesn’t need any substitutes.

“In my view, Eriksen isn’t a player who can make the difference at the highest level. This coming summer, they should instead concentrate completely on the transfer of Kai Havertz. They also still have Philippe Coutinho, too, who plays outstandingly at the 10. You also can’t forget Thomas Müller, who can play every offensive position and should not be let go. I stand by my opinion: Eriksen makes no sense to me.”

Matthaus makes a good point, although there is a good chance Eriksen’s poor displays are the result of his failed summer transfer. It wouldn’t be surprising if he left Spurs and rediscovered his best form elsewhere.

Then again, some would say Eriksen is not consistent enough to play for one of Europe’s biggest clubs. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.

  1. I agree he has an inflated opinion of his own talents why do you think Real Madrid have not considered any bids for him if and when he leaves us wil see who is prepaired to give him the contract he thinks he is worth .
