The 30-man shortlist for the 2019 Ballon d’Or has been announced, and there is a shock nomination for a Tottenham player.

Spurs captain Hugo Lloris is among the 30 players competing for the esteemed award. The Ballon d’Or is annually given to the best player in the world, so it is perhaps surprising to see Lloris among the nominees.

The Frenchman captained his country to World Cup glory in 2018. But despite his role in helping Tottenham reach the Champions League final earlier this year, his recent form has been poor.

In the process of dislocating his elbow against Brighton earlier this month, Lloris made the latest in a line of blunders to give away a goal. Errors have infamously crept into his game over the last couple of years, and he is no longer rated among the best goalkeepers on the planet.

But his nomination shows he is clearly still well respected in the world of football. What’s more, the Ballon d’Or is a product of France Football, which might also have played a part in Lloris’ place on the shortlist.

See how Spurs fans reacted below.
