Jan Vertonghen is a doubt for Tottenham’s Premier League meeting with Everton on Sunday with a hamstring injury, the club has confirmed.

The Belgian was left out of the squad that travelled to Liverpool last weekend, with Mauricio Pochettino preferring a centre-back partnership of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez in the 2-1 defeat at Anfield.

Vertonghen may have been in contention to return against Everton, but Spurs have confirmed the defender has a hamstring problem and is being monitored ahead of the visit to Goodison Park.

That almost certainly means Alderweireld and Sanchez will start again this weekend, with Vertonghen possibly making the bench if deemed fit enough.

Meanwhile, Erik Lamela also has a hamstring injury and has been ruled out of the Everton game, while Hugo Lloris continues his recovery from a dislocated elbow. Danny Rose is suspended after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season against Liverpool.

Tottenham are without a win in their last three league games, so all three points are required on Sunday. However, it will be tough with Everton also desperate for a victory amid their own questionable form.
