Moussa Sissoko has been ruled out for three months after suffering medial collateral ligament damage in his right knee during the festive period.
The French midfielder, who missed Tottenham’s FA Cup game against Middlesbrough on Saturday, injured his knee in the defeat to Southampton on Boxing Day and is expected to return to action in April – meaning he could miss up to 13 matches, including both legs of Spurs’ Champions League clash against Leipzig, but could return for the quarter-finals if Jose Mourinho’s men get past the Bundesliga leaders.
Spurs confirmed that Sissoko underwent surgery on Tuesday and will continue to be monitored by the club’s medical staff.
With Tanguy Ndombele also facing a spell on the sidelines after hobbling off at St Mary’s with a hip problem, it leaves Mourinho with just two fit central midfielders in the shape of Eric Dier and Harry Winks – forcing the Portuguese to possibly dip into the January market.
