Tottenham are interested in signing Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, according to Sky Sports.
Hojbjerg has been with Southampton since 2016, making a total of 123 appearances for the club. He has featured 27 times across all competitions this season, earning plaudits for his role in helping to turn the Saints’ form around over recent weeks – during a run that included a 1-0 victory over Spurs on New Year’s Day.
On Thursday, Sky Sports claimed Tottenham were considering a late move for the midfielder, but it soon became clear that a deal before the January deadline was unrealistic. Sky Sports’ story now suggests Spurs have made Hojbjerg one of their top targets for the summer.
However, the Londoners will apparently face competition from fierce rivals Arsenal for Hojbjerg’s signature. Sky Sports’ report also cites Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who believes Everton are considering a £35 million move for the Dane.
Spurs have been light in midfield at times this season but summer arrivals Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso appear to be edging closer to being a regular duo in midfield. With that in mind, Jose Mourinho could do with a defensive midfielder to sit behind those two – Hojbjerg arguably isn’t the answer as he is positionally similar to Ndombele and Lo Celso.
