Jose Mourinho says it is a “problem” that Tottenham don’t have a senior striker in the squad after failing to sign a goalscorer in the January transfer window.

Spurs brought in Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven, Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica and made Giovani Lo Celso’s loan deal permanent after agreeing to pay the required fee to Real Betis.

However, the Londoners failed to sign a new centre-forward, a position that desperately needed strengthening after Harry Kane suffered a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring. Kane has already missed a month of action and isn’t expected to return until April at least.

Tottenham were linked with a number of possible replacements but in the end no striker arrived. Speaking to reporters ahead of this weekend’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City, Mourinho admitted it will no be easy for Spurs to compete in multiple competitions without a centre-forward.

“In this moment, are we going to have a problem [at centre-forward]? Yes, we are going to have a problem. But that’s the way it is,” Mourinho said (via the Guardian).

“I cannot hide. If I say it’s easy to play three competitions without a striker, I’m going to lie. I cannot lie. But if it’s not possible, it’s not possible. For me the great thing is that we’re all together on this in the club. There’s nobody to blame. We don’t want a striker to just help us now. We want a striker to be good for our future, possibly to play with Harry Kane together in the future. And with the difficulties of the market, it was very, very difficult to find [one].”

Mourinho will now be planning to tweak his system in order to make the most of Kane’s absence until April. We think Son Heung-min will play through the middle on Sunday – check out our full predicted XI here.

  1. I can understand the problem, you don’t just buy any one just to fill the gap,the one thing that does worry me is ,if we don’t get into the top four ,we will pay dearly ,it will cost spurs millions,.
I have always said ,if you want to compete with the big boys ,you have to pay big,I’m afraid Mr Levy realise on his managers to much to fetch youngsters through,.
You can’t have allyoungsters ,you must have experience as well,.

  2. Spurs can certainly kiss goodbye to a top four finish, due to not buying a good striker yet again, which will result in no top players wanting to sign for Spurs, well done Levy a gooner in disguise .
