Tottenham might have suffered a fourth consecutive defeat and exited the FA Cup against Norwich City on Wednesday, but the Spurs Head Coach didn’t shy away from heaping the praise on midfielder Oliver Skipp after the game.

The 19-year-old was making his first start for Spurs since the Carabao Cup loss at Colchester United in September and despite a generally poor showing from the majority of his teammates, the youngster impressed in a two-man midfield next to another Tottenham academy graduate in Harry Winks.

Skipp has endured an extremely frustrating campaign, with his appearance against the Canaries just his seventh of the season and first since coming off the bench in the Champions League dead rubber against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in December.

The midfielder, who clearly caught Mourinho’s eye, will be hoping to build off this showing, especially with Spurs short in the midfield department – with Eric Dier recently moving to centre-back and record signing Tanguy Ndombele struggling with his fitness.

Mourinho was asked about Skipp’s performance. He told Football.London: “Phenomenal. Very, very good. Very, very good, solid performance.

“Even with the yellow card I kept him for two hours, first of all because Winks was in trouble, secondly because he was so solid, so mature, so confident that I was never afraid of a second yellow card coming.

“He was always in control of the game. We could see the difference also on the physical condition of him and the people who us playing all the time.”

  1. Is he taking the piss? Skipper can’t pass…header or shoot. Runs around a lot and apart from bad tackles he offers nothing.
