Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has drawn comparisons to the situation he went through when leaving Spurs, as to where Harry Kane currently finds himself – and has hinted that the England captain could end up signing for Manchester United, given the clubs “strong connection.”
Having scored 46 goals in all competitions for Tottenham between 2006 and 2008, including one in the League Cup Final victory over Chelsea at Wembley, Berbatov joined the Red Devils ahead of the 2008-2009 campaign and would help Six Alex Ferguson’s men win their 11th Premier League title in his first season at Old Trafford.
The 39-year-old, who was a fans favourite during his two years at White Hart Lane, ended up winning six major honours during his time with United and reckons that Kane, who hasn’t featured for Spurs since injuring his hamstring on New Year’s Day, might need to sacrifice his love for the club in order to further his career and win trophies.
In a recent interview with Betfair, the former Bulgarian striker said: “This week I also saw some comments from Harry Kane, he loves Spurs but if they aren’t going to be producing trophies then maybe it is time to leave.
“He knows all that, of course he’s thinking about it, now even more than before.
“I think once it returns, maybe football will change in the amount of money that is spent, in the way players are bought and sold.
“If you are Kane in this situation and Daniel Levy is your chairman, he isn’t going to sell you cheap, he is going to ask for what is fair, which in the case of Kane is a lot of money.
“I see a lot of similarities in the situation I went through and what is happening with Kane at the minute.
“There is a strong connection between Spurs and Manchester United, Teddy Sheringham was at Tottenham then went to Old Trafford, I was a Spurs striker and went to United and now Kane, who’s also a striker, is being linked with a move there.”
