Tottenham have asked Jan Vertonghen if he would be willing to play beyond his contract’s expiration at the end of the month, according to Sky Sports.

However, Spurs are yet to learn of Vertonghen’s decision and the defender apparently could leave the club before the end of the Premier League campaign.

The Belgian, who joined Tottenham from Ajax in the summer of 2012, has endured a difficult season and has repeatedly been linked with a free transfer away from the club when his current contract expires at the end of June. We recently relayed a Daily Express story that claimed Jose Mourinho has called off talks over a new deal for Vertonghen.

But now, Sky Sports is reporting that the defender’s future is still up in the air. Spurs are said to have asked Vertonghen if he can stay at the club going into July, but the club is yet to hear an answer.

The report goes on to say he is attracting interest from Napoli and Inter Milan as Spurs are unlikely to offer him a new long-term contract. At 33, that was never likely to happen – perhaps a parting of ways really is the best outcome for all parties.
