Tottenham have been forced to give up their pursuit of Nicolo Zaniolo after learning of AS Roma’s huge asking price, according to the Daily Star.
Zaniolo is one of the brighest young talents in Italian football having already made 45 Serie A appearances for Roma at the age of 20. This term he scored six goals across all competitions before his season was cut short by a serious knee injury.
The Star claims Spurs have been tracking Zaniolo since last summer when they tried to sign the Italy international in a swap deal involving Toby Alderweireld. The Londoners apparently moved onto other targets when that move fell through, but their interest has remained strong.
However, Tottenham have now been left disappointed once again. The Star believes Roma value Zaniolo at £62 million, which Spurs simply can’t afford.
The report goes on to say Jose Mourinho is in favour of signing a more defensive midfielder than Zaniolo, who is primarily known for his attacking attributes. We agree that improvement at the back is far more urgently needed than offensive reinforcements right now.
