Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Ryan Sessegnon “wasn’t injured” – and simply wasn’t selected for Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Everton on Monday night.
The 20-year-old, who joined from Fulham on deadline day last summer, has endured a difficult opening season in north London in which he has started just four Premier League matches and hasn’t played a single minute since the resumption English football last month.
Sessegnon was on the bench for the draw with Manchester United and the 2-0 win over West Ham, but has been axed from the matchday squad entirely for Spurs’ last two matches.
Perhaps even more concerning for the ex-Fulham star was the fact that 18-year-old left-back Dennis Cirkin, who has never played for the first-team, seemingly took his place on the bench against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Mourinho was asked about Sessegnon’s exclusion in his post-match press conference. He told Football.London: “No, not injured. He’s working with us for a couple of weeks but I thought you’d ask me why Dennis Cirkin, 18-years-old is on the bench.
“It’s a very positive thing. I like Dennis very, very much, he works really hard.
“To have the opportunity of so many players on the bench bench is very nice and for him to feel like he is an option, like Harvey White was on the bench against Manchester United and Skipp on the bench almost every match. I think it’s also important for the young guys.”
With Spurs facing a fixture pileup with another three games in seven days beginning with the trip to Bournemouth on Thursday, Sessegnon will be hoping to get some minutes before the season draws to a close, but at present, he doesn’t appear to be in Mourinho’s plans moving forward.
Mourinho = a complete Richard .
see what i did there ?
i dont think Mourinho is the one for us he seems to fall out with to many players and i dont think the team like him i could be wrong but they look like they dont really give a shit prob only Dier gets on with him must be hes love child
Well done Jose, you should get a medal for man management.
State openly that you regard highly Sessegnon even comparing him to Ashley Cole, then not even having him on the bench.
Nothing quite like showing faith and encouraging a young player;brilliant diplomacy….
Jose, you are a clown.
