Eric Dier has revealed how Jose Mourinho often motivates Tottenham players with criticism.

The England international has been a regular under Mourinho, rediscovering his best form as a centre-back during the run-in.

That was until he was handed a four-game suspension by the FA for an incident that happened long before lockdown.

Speaking to the Athletic, Dier told the story of how Mourinho provoked him to improve his training performance ahead of the last game of the season.

Dier had missed the previous four matches because of his ban but hoped to be back in the team for the trip to Crystal Palace on the final day.

But Mourinho did not mince his words when speaking to Dier about whether he deserves to play.

“You’ve been shit in training since your suspension. Do you want to play this weekend?” Mourinho said, according to Dier.

When Dier insisted he wanted to play at Selhurt Park, Mourinho replied: “Yeah, well you’ve been shit since you got suspended.”

Dier elaborated on Mourinho’s method to get the best out of him.

He said: “I felt like I knew what he was doing. He was just giving me a kick up the arse before the final game. Those kind of things trigger you.”

Dier is expected to play a key role next season – Spurs fans will hope he can keep up his improved form going into the new campaign.
