Spartak Moscow are increasingly confident of striking a deal for Tottenham defender Serge Aurier, according to Sky Sports.

Aurier has lost his place in the Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up following the signing of Matt Doherty from Wolves. Doherty has started in each of Spurs’ three matches so far this season, with Aurier demoted to the bench.

Mourinho effectively used the Ivory Coast international as a right winger last season, instructing Ben Davies on the other flank to drop in, which allowed Aurier to get forward.

But when called upon to perform defensive duties, the 27-year-old failed to cut out his characteristic mistakes, forcing Mourinho to act in the transfer market by bringing in Doherty as his new first-choice right-back.

And now it appears Aurier is on his way out. Sky Sports (Transfer Centre, Monday 10:26am BST) claims Spartak Moscow are confident of signing the full-back, who is said to be open to joining the Russian club.

Aurier will be no great loss to Spurs after Doherty’s arrival. But it will be interesting to see if the Londoners enter the market for a new back-up right-back.
