Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is keen to strengthen his defensive options by signing Real Madrid centre-back Eder Militao, according to reports in Spain.

Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier have established themselves as Spurs’ main centre-back pairing this term, although Mourinho sometimes picks Davinson Sanchez if he requires more pace.

But there have been doubts for some time over Sanchez’ ability, and the summer signing of Joe Rodon from Swansea City – and the emergence of youngster Japhet Tanganga – has only put extra pressure on the Colombian.

Indeed, it seems Sanchez could fall further down the pecking order if Mourinho gets his way this month.

Spanish outlet AS claims the Spurs boss wants to bring in Militao, who has fallen out of favour in Madrid, not playing since testing positive for coronavirus in October.

The 22-year-old Brazilian was highly-rated enough for Real Madrid to spend big on him 18 months ago, but it seems he could leave by the end of January – and Tottenham could be his destination.

Mourinho, who apparently wanted Militao last summer, probably has other targets in mind, so it will be interesting to see if the club makes a move for Militao or somebody else.
