Glenn Hoddle has urged Tottenham to stick with Jose Mourinho despite Tottenham suffering a fifth defeat in six Premier League matches on Sunday.

Spurs lost 2-1 at West Ham United after a poor start to each half. They rallied after the break thanks to an influential Gareth Bale cameo, but the Londoners are now nine points off fourth place.

Mourinho may now be relying on winning the Europa League to secure Champions League football for next season.

But despite the team’s dreadful form, Hoddle thinks it would be “ridiculous” for Tottenham to part ways with their manager before the end of the campaign.

Asked if Mourinho should be sacked now, Hoddle told the London Evening Standard: “No I don’t, not at the moment.

“He has been brought in to bring silverware, he is in a cup final. How can you sack somebody who has got a cup final in April? It is ridiculous. That is the reason why he has been brought in.”

Hoddle added: “Consistency and maybe other things have got to change over time, but I think he has earned the right with what he has done in his career to be given more time.”

Hoddle makes a good point. In fairness to Mourinho, he is in desperate need of two new centre-backs and other reinforcements.

That said, the attacking style of play hasn’t improved throughout his tenure – Spurs remain reliant on individual brilliance to win matches.

Winning the League Cup is surely the minimum Mourinho must achieve to keep his job.

  1. I agree with hoddle on this. The team needs investment not another manager. We need new centre halfs, dier and Davison are not good enough for cl seeking club. We need a new right back. Sort the defence with proper top quality players then we are ok however I fear come the summer window son, kane and alli (don’t mind he been rubbish for over 2 years) will be gone.

    Definitely agree with Hoddle.
We haven’t been able to strengthen the team as either Pochettino or Mourinho may well have wanted. The team needed refreshing over two years ago and we are paying the price for it! Whilst I don’t like current style we and Mourinho are stuck with it at the moment. That’s what it means supporting a team through the bad and well as the good years!

  3. What good days recently!!!!??? We are an elite club potential wise , but until the board back the manager properly we will underachieve. Also its about judging players. Are their seriously no centre / full backs in lower leagues. Dixon & Bould spring to mind. Robertson came from Hull to Liverpool. Its in midfield & wings where maybe big money needs spending. Dier, Winks, Sanchez , Lamela & 5 or 6 others need to go.

  4. Sorry Paul, you are so wrong an elite club, has more than a big stadium, try these facts fir size, last league title 60 years ago, never won the Premier league or champions league /European Cup, last fa Cup win almost 30 years ago,
And a selling club since 1987 Hoddle, waddle, Gascoigne, Archibald, Bale, berbatov, Erikson, Modric, Carrick, and Walker just a few players who we didn’t want to sell, who moved on,
