Tottenham were interested in signing Roma defender Roger Ibanez last summer, according to reports in Italy.

Ibanez has been a regular starter for Roma this season, making 26 appearances across all competitions, including 22 outings in Serie A.

The centre-back’s performances have earned him a new contract, the details of which have been revealed by Italian outlet Calcio Mercato.

It is believed Ibanez has signed a new four-year deal that includes an €80 million release clause.

The report goes on to say Spurs and Leicester City were keen on the 22-year-old Brazilian last summer.

But his new release clause means it will be very difficult for Tottenham or another suitor to get him out of Roma before the start of next season.

Indeed, Spurs can probably cross Ibanez off their list of potential centre-backs, a position they simply must strengthen if they are to challenge on multiple fronts next term.

Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld have combined to keep clean sheets in each of Tottenham’s last two Premier League games.

But in the long-term, Jose Mourinho will surely want more options in the middle of defence.
