Tottenham defender Ben Davies is facing up to three weeks on the sidelines with a calf problem, according to the Evening Standard.

Davies had been called up to the Wales squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers and friendly against Mexico, but withdrew on Tuesday morning, less than 48 hours after he was a second-half substitute in the victory Aston Villa on Sunday.

It’s unclear whether the left-back sustained the problem at Villa Park or once he joined up with his national team.

But Spurs boss Jose Mourinho appeared to clear up those doubts when revealing on Instagram that Davies played with an injury at Villa. He said: “When a player plays injured to help his team recover from two bad defeats, this can happen. A man, a team player.”

If Davies does miss three weeks, he would be unavailable for Premier League games against Newcastle and Manchester United early next month, although he’d hope to return in time for the visit to Everton on 17 April.
